Cebu – Living Here Or Just Having A Great Time
Real Cost of Living in Cebu – one of the most affordable and greatest cities to live in as a long term traveller or even on a budget for a short stay. There are so many girls around wanting to hook up with you it’s not funny.
You can rent a really nice place either through AirBNB or hit the ground when you get there and do some leg work but you pay very little in comparison to anywhere else in the world. It really is possible to live in Cebu for under $1000 USD a month. You can even do that on some pensions and disability payments if you can receive them whilst abroad making it cheaper to live overseas swamped by women wanting you rather than living a miserable life at home in some run down crappy apartment or home where no one is friendly and the women probably dont take too much of an interest in you.
Just outside of the city of Cebu in areas such as Mandaue you can rent a two bedroom, two bathroom townhouse in a gated security area for around $200USD a month. You will be amazed at what little money you need to pay to stay here. All around the city of Cebu are five star shopping malls, people driving fancy cars, it really should be a major First World City considering my home country is pretty shitty in comparison.
If you head a little further out of the city you can rent houses for $100-$150 USD a month and they are very nice, but travelling back and forth gets tiring especially in the famous Cebu traffic jams that happen daily. It really is like a little version of Manila with the traffic problems.
One of the best benefits of living in Cebu is that it has amazing transportation. You have motorbike taxis, trikes, public buses with air-conditioning, some buses even have wifi enabled and DVD players to watch some horror films they provide. They seem to love horror movies in the Philippines. On top of the other modes of transport are Jeepneys, being told once that after the war the Americans just dumped all their leftover vehicles in the country as it would cost too much to ship them home or bury them so the locals turned them into tricked out mini-bus type transport vehicles where you jump on the open back trailer and pass your 8 pesos up to the driver and press the buzzer when you want to get off on that route.
For general utilities such as electricity and internet, that might be your biggest cost depending on how much air-conditioning you use every day and how fast you need your internet connection to be with large download quotas. One place in Subic recently had fibre optic internet installed and was getting a whopping 200mbps both up and down. Simply crazy fast internet that most of the rest of the world doesn’t even have yet.
For Electricity if you do not use air-conditioning all the time, it will set you back around $50 USD a month. Internet access will cost you around $40 if you look around for decent packages. Everything is still cheaper here in Cebu than wherever country you were born in, in the West, that’s for sure.
For groceries and general nic-nacs you might purchase each week the prices will be considerably lower especially if you love the local food. Buying food at markets is the best way to shop and if you can look past the meat being slaughtered and slopped on tables covered in flies, which will open a few questions originally, it all works out ok in the end. A dozen eggs are around $1USD and a large cooked roast chicken cooked over charcoal will set you back about $1.50USD a pound. It’s so easy to cheap here. Especially if you love SPAM, they have so many varieties of canned SPAM meats it’s not even funny. Bacon flavour, SPAM filled with cheeses, chillis, anything you can think of. Last I counted, there were around 30 different varieties of SPAM in the supermarket I was looking in.
You can also visit the very popular Ayala Mall where you have a huge selection of international restaurants, although these will be pricey and aimed at foreigners rather than locals, but anything you miss from back home you will definitely find in Ayala Mall Cebu City.
If you come from a country where medical cover isn’t free and covered by your government you will find that a visit to a local hospital such as Chong Hua Hospital will run you around $4USD for a doctor visit and the medicine is 1/10th of the price back home if not cheaper.
If for some unfortunate reason you need to visit a dentist in Cebu, a clean and scale will set you back $20 USD and you cant beat that price even in Thailand of all places where it’s incredibly cheap there too. What I can’t figure out is how many of these girls in the bars have braces when they cost upwards of $1000USD plus general monthly maintenance to tighten them all up. They must be plying their trade in the bar to pull in that sort of money. Braces seem to be a big thing for the ladies now, I guess it shows they have a lot of money to spend on such a luxury in the country.
Overall the real cost of living in Cebu is amazing – you have all your western comforts from home, first class cinemas, some of the cheapest transport options available, an international airport very nearby and shopping malls with foreign-aimed stores selling anything else you might miss from home such as Vegemite and Marmite.
Not only is it a cheap place to live it Cebu has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world just a few hours drive away or a short bus ride. Flights to anywhere else in the Philippines on Cebu Pacific will only set you back around $20USD a ticket if you time it right and can schedule the right day to fly by playing with your dates.
For the guys hunting ladies of the night you have J-Ave where it’s almost the same as High Society in Angeles City, Philippines where the ratio of women to men is probably 10 women to every one guy. All 10 of them women are most likely working girls, so in the end you will have to pay even if they pretend to not be a working girl.
There really is no reason to pay for sex in Cebu, there are thousands upon thousands of girls walking around the streets, shopping in the malls, eating in restaurants and hanging out all around town but generally they are too shy to come up and talk to you directly. The best way to proceed is hit the dating sites, it’s all a numbers game. You can flip your phone open and have thousands of single females willing to meet you that very hour at a restaurant, bar, your condo or hotel. You might not get there on the first date, but after the second date and she senses you’re a genuine nice guy, it’s all happening.
